Steelers Wish-List Wednesday: CB Nate Wiggins

By this point in the draft process, fans start to see the Steelers organization’s patterns on which direction they may take in the first round. It doesn’t mean that they end up taking that certain player but said player is likely to get that call from Coach Tomlin. The boxes that are checked with any player that raises the most interest is the NFL Combine formal visit, a Pro Day visit from the head coach and general manager, and the Pre-Draft visit. 

Nate Wiggins not only checks those boxes but also fills a major need for the Steelers. The Steelers need another cornerback on the roster to play significant snaps this upcoming season. Yes, they did trade for Donte Jackson, but Wiggins can solidify the other side of Joey Porter Jr. At 6’1”, 173 pounds, Wiggins certainly has the size the Steelers like in an outside cornerback. Add to that his 4.28 40-Yard Dash time and he might be a can’t miss prospect most haven’t thought about. 

The former First-Team All-ACC product is one of the better cover corners in this draft. If you have watched his tape, you see he had two pick-sixes. That tells fans that he can make the splash plays that plagued the Steelers last season. He is smooth in his hips and transitions too. And of course, he has elite recovery speed in case he does get beat occasionally by receivers. 

His biggest weakness is his run support. The Steelers love corners who can stop the run too, but it can be developed. Look how much better Porter Jr. was towards the end of the year in run support. And if it clicks for him in the NFL, the Steelers will have two elite cornerbacks on their roster for the next few years.
