The city of Pittsburgh has a rich history in professional sports that has landed six Super Bowl titles, five World Series titles, and five Stanley Cup championships. Getting these teams to the championship was aided by some great athletes and many who capped their careers with an induction to their respective Hall of Fame. But if you were asked to name just one athlete from all the sports who contributed the most to that sport, who would it be?
With the Pittsburgh Steelers, it might be difficult to name the best player ever. The best athlete? That’s a tough question as well. But those who would have to be considered would probably be Joe Greene, Mel Blount, Rod Woodson, Jack Lambert, Jack Ham, Franco Harris, John Stallworth, Lynn Swann, Hines Ward, and Ben Roethlisberger. Greene was the cornerstone of the Steel Curtain defense and his drafting in 1969 was the first stage of Chuck Noll building his dynasty.
With the Pittsburgh Pirates, Roberto Clemente first comes to mind. His contributions to the game are one thing but his efforts for humanity loom larger. Willie Stargell was beloved in Pittsburgh and gave the impression of being everyone’s friend. Honus Wagner hails from the Pittsburgh area and is one of Pittsburgh’s most accomplished athletes. Pie Traynor is another legend. Elroy Face was one of the greatest pitchers in Pirates history.
With the Pittsburgh Penguins, there is no arguing that Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby are two of the greatest players in NHL history. Mario might just get the edge on Sid the Kid, but it’s close. We could probably throw Bruno Sammartino in the mix, but they would probably be naysayers who believe pro wrestling is not an actual sport and I’m on that side.
The teams playing right now include Sid Crosby but also TJ Watt who is developing into one of the greatest linebackers in Steelers history. The Buccos have Andrew McCutchen back in town and while a fan favorite his career does not have the statistical support of some of other past greats.
This is a good argument to prove that the city of Pittsburgh has given the world some exceptional athletes and not mentioned above was Billy Conn, a Pittsburgh native and former boxing light heavyweight champion.
