5 Reasons Why Kenny Pickett Won't Get Rattled

With the 20th pick of the NFL Draft, the Steelers took a familiar quarterback in Pitt's Kenny Pickett. He will join quarterbacks Mitchell Trubisky, Mason Rudolph, and Chris Oladokun, in what will likely be an open competition for the Steelers' quarterbacking job.

Last year at Pittsburgh, Pickett threw for 4,219 yards, 42 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He had an outstanding season. Pickett finished his collegiate career as Pitt's all-time leader in passing yards (12,303), pass completions (1,045), total offense (13,112), touchdown responsibility (102), and rushing touchdowns.

Here are five reasons why Pickett won't ever be too afraid of the moment:

1. His Ability to Read Defenses

Pickett has shown the ability to read defenses; and reading defenses is the most critical trait for a quarterback. Coming into camp as a rookie with the ability to read defenses is a big plus for Pickett. There will be times when opposing defenses will confuse him with particular looks, but he could be able to adjust with his IQ quickly. Reading the defense is a big plus and probably why the Steelers chose him as the first quarterback in the draft.

2. Scrambling Ability

Pickett keeps his eyes down the field and can find targets while scrambling outside of the pocket. Pickett's ability to scramble and make plays down the field will help the Steelers be more multiple on offense. Being able to make plays outside the pocket is vital in the NFL. He has shown the ability to take off and run for first downs and touchdowns. That's something the Steelers haven't had since Big Ben was a youngin.

3. Pocket Presence

The quarterback has a good feel in the pocket and knows when to get rid of the ball or take off running. Pocket presence is critical for Pickett because he has a slow release and small hands. In the NFL, you have about three seconds before getting rid of the ball. If Pickett gets the ball out quickly, he will avoid strip-sacks. The quarterback should be able to get rid of the ball fast and accurately. He has shown that consistently.

4. Decision-Making

Pickett makes good decisions with the football, this past season, he threw just seven interceptions, and he rarely forces the ball in coverage. If nothing is there, Pickett will take off and find yards with his feet or improvising. A team with a good defense like the Steelers could benefit from a quarterback that will not turn the ball over. So instead, Pickett will find the open man and get the ball down the field.

5. Supporting Cast

The Steelers have a solid supporting cast that will help Pickett for a long time. Running back, Najee Harris can catch out of the backfield. Harris ran for 1,200 yards and caught 74 passes last season. Receivers Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool are a solid core. Johnson caught 107 passes for 1,161 yards the previous season. Claypool added 59 catches for 860 yards. Also, tight end Pat Freiermuth is a great weapon for Pickett. A tight-end is usually a young quarterbacks best friend.

These are all really solid traits for a quarterback, and there is no reason Pickett should fail in Pittsburgh. He has a solid supporting cast, but the NFL is a different monster; he must continue to put in work and watch a ton of film to be the best quarterback he can be. But even if his skills don't translate immediately, his demeanor won't change.
