A New Era of Pittsburgh Sports is Upon Us

There are many changes happening in Pittsburgh sports right now. The Steelers have a young quarterback in Kenny Pickett to go with a slew of new and youthful skill players on both sides of the ball. Of course, we all just heard about Heinz Field changing its name to Acrisure Stadium (whatever that means.)

The Penguins recently hired a new general manager with Ron Hextall.  While some of the savvy household veteran names are still on the Pens like Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang, there are new names on the rise that are eager to get handed over the reigns in the next few years.

The Pirates may even be the closest to competing for a championship out of all three of the professional teams in Pittsburgh. Several years ago if someone were to say that, then they would probably be laughed out of town. Yet, with loads of young talent in the minor leagues, and several great players already on the Pirates roster, this team is getting a lot of attention around the league, not just locally. Remember the name O’Neil Cruz, because several years from now, he could be winning most valuable player for the National League.

All of this newness is hard to wrap your head around if you’re a Pittsburgh fan. I mean, just not seeing Big Ben run out of the tunnel on Sundays will feel like I am watching some Sci-Fi space continuum movie…Yikes. It will be bizarre indeed. Although, I do believe that the Steelers tradition of winning, “the standard” as its known, will continue, even with the tough and competitive AFC North division. The Steelers needed to get a new generation of talent on offense to compete with the young arms like Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Deshaun Watson, and that is exactly what they did.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are in a “one last cup run” with Kris Letang and Sidney Crosby. The Pens also hold the longest active playoff streak in all North American professional sports leagues with an insane 16 straight postseason appearances. During that time of course, Pittsburgh fans have been treated to 3 Stanley Cup championships, which is tied for the most with the Chicago Blackhawks during that span (thanks, Avalanche). Fans can’t really say there's been any disappointment in the last two decades with the Penguins, but we are still hungry for more. Bringing one more Stanley Cup championship to the city of Pittsburgh would solidify the Penguins dynasty as the greatest NHL team since the Montreal Canadiens, who won basically every championship from 1955-1975.

As I said before, I truly believe that we Pittsburgh fans could see the Pirates win a championship before the Pens and the Steelers. A world series championship is something that even some middle aged Pittsburghers haven’t seen, with the last win coming in 1979. The Pirates had a stretch of playoff seasons from 2012-2014, and that time is about to be upon us once again. To be clear, I am not saying that the Pirates will be one of the best teams in baseball like the Yankees or the Dodgers, they are too much of a small market team to compete with them. I am saying that the Bucs will be in the playoffs soon, and I believe anything can happen in the postseason, as we all saw with the Washington Nationals winning the 2019 World Series.
