Brief Early Penguins Offseason Outlook

So Penguins fans, you are probably wondering what is going on with key free agents such as Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang?

And yes, you are right to wonder, because there are a lot of unspecified details concerning the two big names. Generally, what comes to mind with our trusted analysts is that at least one will be signed and the other will walk.

Both are the same age and can still pack a punch on the offensive-line. Some would say that Kris Letang’s versatility on both ends of the ice gives him that edge to persuasively sign him over Malkin. Or would you give preference to the offensive power house Malkin who has created countless memories with good ole Sid The Kid.

If I was forced to choose, it would in fact be Letang that gets signed because of the defensive edge.

While Malkin walking would be a gamble, it would rather be the price worth paying than risking losing a couple of notable young free agents who will provide speed and tangible lineup combinations that in turn provide scoring options.

With a key number of defensemen on the block in free agency, why not bolster the blue line at first and then worry about the offensive end afterwards when there is clarity in doing so? Not only would it make the team more systematic to play against in the defensive zone, but it would also give the goaltending an easier look at pucks, as well as help keep the offense fresh for attacks.

Finding a steady back-up goalie might not be as difficult as once thought because of the star names and rookie goaltenders putting their names out there for good measure. I wouldn't count on DeSmith or Domingue to be back in the crease, but I could see Ron Hextall making a move for another young, cheap goalie asset. Rookie goaltenders are the backbone of today’s league and will make a difference moving on. Remember, Tristan Jarry was once that young backup goaltender. The same can be said for Matt Murray. See what I'm onto here?

As for the offense, you may not want to hear it, but keeping Kasperi Kapanen makes a lot of sense as well, with the cap space just under $24 million this year.

What matters most is how can General Manager Ron Hextall shape up the teams needs without going to the extreme and making the most of his assets at the moment. It will be an interesting off-season with free agency looming and what moves are made accordingly. We will definitely be watching and keeping yinz informed.
