It's been a wild offseason for not just the NFL, but for the Steelers as well. It's been filled with many twists and turns, and we still have months to go before training camp. But with the NFL draft now finished, a big part of the offseason is over with and we can now see how the roster is shaping up. But the big question is, who will be the quarterbacks' going into the season?
It's safe to say the quarterback room for the Steelers has changed considerably compared to last year, with the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger and the tragic death of Dwayne Haskins. Kenny Pickett was drafted 20th overall, and Mitch Trubisky was added to the room in free agency. The only remaining QB from the year before is Mason Rudolph. How often do teams have three new quarterbacks on their roster from one year to the next?
The Steelers currently have 4 quarterbacks in total. 2017 NFC Pro Bowler Trubisky, 2017 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm winner Rudolph, and two rookies in Pickett and Chris Oladokun. I'm going to go out on a limb and say there's no clear cut starter on the team. With that, there is a belief that one of these quarterbacks will be cut before the start of the 2022 season. Below is my predicted depth chart for the Steelers QB room for the new season:
Mitch Trubisky
Kenny Pickett
Chris Oladokun
It's still an unfamiliar circumstance that Big Ben isn't here. Post Ben's retirement, the Steelers are looking for the 2x Super Bowl champions' successor. I'm predicting that the odd man out of the QB room is former 2018 3rd-round pick out of Oklahoma State, Mason Rudolph.
Though Rudolph has shown flashes here and there, inconsistency has held him down. Plus financially, it's a smarter decision for Pittsburgh to cut bait with him as the third string, considering Rudolph signed a 1-year contract worth about $5 million. When Chris Oladokun was drafted, the plan seemed to be clear from there to find Rudolph's replacement for a cheaper price. Plus it would give the Steelers' a QB with much more upside, considering that Oladokun showed some flashes in college.

The only way I can see Rudolph staying is if he has a strong training camp performance in which he contends for the starting job. If that's the case, Oladokun will likely be added to the practice squad. Kenny Pickett and Mitchell Trubisky are two locks for the roster because the team has invested major capital in both. Although Oladokun was a 7th round pick, that could actually end up working in his favor.
