As scary as it may be for Yinzers, there is a part of me that believes there is a pathway for Matt Canada to get an extension with the Steelers. While there is a need to kick tradition to the side in Pittsburgh, more people on the inside may be backing Canada and advocating for him to stay with the team. It does sound like the players inside the building work very well with Canada and blame the lack of execution on poor offensive play.
This came to my mind because I can see the team keeping Canada, just like any other job would keep someone. It is easier to retain someone and work on things than to go out and spend time finding a new candidate and bringing in a whole new system. If the lack of execution is true and the relationships are fortified, Canada will have a solid shot at staying in Pittsburgh. We got to see a glimpse of what may be and what could be from the second half of the Rams game when the offense looked fluid, and everyone got involved. That second half was the best offensive performance Steelers fans have seen this year and maybe in the last three years.
Unfortunately, it may have sparked another reason for Tomlin and the front office to keep Canada.
Do I think Canada stays? No, I think he is performing for his next job now. What happens now until the end of the year and beyond is for Canada to have something on his résumé to show for the next team who has an interest in him. I thought it was important to explain how there is a chance that every Yinzer could be in for a rude awakening come next year if the offense starts clicking in the back half of the year. As per every year, there are going to be a handful of people looking for jobs, and with Omar Khn and company bringing some fresh blood to the front office, I think they will scout all talent and do their homework to make the Steelers the best team they can be.
