Pittsburgh has an unwavering love and support for our sports teams. This loyalty has not changed from the days of watching hockey at the Garden and the Pirates at Recreation Park. The unity of Pittsburgh’s sports community is truly remarkable, and it’s this unshakeable devotion that has cemented the city's reputation as one of the most sports-crazed and enthusiastic in the nation. Here are 10 times Pittsburghers showed their devotion to our beloved teams – and when they showed their appreciation in return.

1.    Pirate fans headed to a game in 1909. By the way, the Pirates defeated the Detroit Tigers that year and earned their first World Series Championship victory. Much of the credit was given to Honus Wagner and Babe Adams.

2.    In 1910, a devoted Pittsburgh Pirates fan adorns his Harley Davidson motorcycle with a pennant proudly displaying his loyalty to the team.

3.    Baseball fans waiting to get into the World Series at Forbes Field in 1925. The Pittsburgh Pirates won the series in seven games, marking their second World Series championship.

4.  In 1955, when the Pittsburgh Pirates held spring training at Terry Park, it was a tradition for the Pirates to send coconuts home to their fans. It was a fun way for players and fans to engage before the start of the season.

5.    Pitt students cheering on the Pirates from atop the Cathedral of Learning on October 13, 1960. They had a clear view of the game but had to listen to what was happening on the radio. That didn’t sway these fans from cheering the Pirates on to victory as they defeated the New York Yankees. Bill Mazeroski hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning clinching a victory for the Pirates.

6.    A young Pirates fan ready for the start of Pittsburgh baseball in 1966. While the Pirates didn't win the World Series in 1966, they made it to the World Series but lost to the Baltimore Orioles in a four-game sweep.

7.    Pittsburgh Pirates fans perched on top of the Kaufman clock, rejoicing in the aftermath of their 1971 World Series triumph. The Pirates won the series in seven games against the Baltimore Orioles.

8.    Diehard Steelers fans decorated their car to show their Steelers pride, complete with a Terrible Towel, initiated by Myron Cope in December 1975.

9.    On November 21, 1979, Terry Bradshaw, of the Steelers, and Willie Stargell, from the Pirates, set aside a day to meet their dedicated fans at Jones & Laughlin Steel Mill.

10. The Incline is decorated during football season to show support for the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the 1990s, players from the Cincinnati Bengals rode the Incline but when they reached the top, one of the players was sick from the ride and was too afraid to get back on the Incline. His wife had to go back down the hill to retrieve their car. Incline workers gave her directions so she could drive back up the hill and pick up her frightened husband.
