This Saturday the Pittsburgh Steelers will play their first preseason game of the season, and their first without Ben Roethlisberger on the roster. As I mentioned in a previous article, due to Big Ben’s retirement, Steelers fans are going to be glued to their TV’s when the Steelers open the preseason.

That begs the question, what should Steelers fans expect? Not much honestly. The first preseason game is an opportunity for guys on the fringe of making the roster to prove themselves. Odds are we won’t see much from Mitch in this first game, outside of a drive or two.

However, while Steelers fans will be interested in the preseason, what they really care about is the regular season. What will Steelers fans see this year? Who better to tell us, than a Steeler themselves?

At Yinzercrazy we have developed an awesome relationship with defensive linemen Chris Wormley, and he was kind enough to answer some of my questions ahead of the preseason opener.

The Steelers traded for Wormley before the beginning of last season, acquiring him from the Ravens. With the injuries to Stephon Tuitt and Tyson Alualu, Wormley found himself in a starting role for the Steelers. It was a role that he filled quite well. Not only did he hold his own, but Wormley also became a cornerstone of the Steelers defense.

The Steelers and Ravens making a trade is a rarity given the rivalry, so Wormley’s arrival was surprising. Coach Tomlin, a master of motivation, did not let this go unnoticed by Wormley. When asked about what Tomlin said to him, he said, “He just kept reminding me away. On top of that they traded me away in the same division.”

Being traded within the division is a sign that the Raven’s weren’t worried about Wormley. In games against the Ravens, Wormley had 3.5 sacks, 12 tackles, and 2 wins.

They should have been worried.

Wormley has quickly become a fan favorite in Pittsburgh due to his play, so I thought it would be appropriate to share some of his thoughts on the Steelers and the upcoming season.

When asked about how playing alongside Cam Heyward and TJ Watt affected his play, Wormley commented, “When you’re sandwiched in between 2 All-Pro players it not only makes you a better player but the entire defense better. Knowing they’re going to be double teamed allows me to get one-on-one matchups.”

Watt and Heyward make life easier for the entire defense along with Wormley. Yet most fans would agree that despite TJ Watt’s historic season, and the defense’s general success, it left a lot to be desired. The Steelers defense is associated with a stifling run defense and a lockdown secondary. But there were moments this season where the Steelers defense looked disjointed and gave up big plays.

Wormley dissuaded any fears of that being recreated this season. Steelers fans should expect, “a more complete defense than last year, A defense that is committed to stopping the run.”

That mindset is surely due to a recommitted effort from the players, but also the addition of Brian Flores to the coaching staff. Flores’ intensity and knowledge should improve the Steelers defense not only at the linebacker position, but from the top down.

Despite Flores’ joining the team, the offseason additions the Steelers made, and Mike Tomlin at the helm (who hasn’t had a losing season in 14 years for those who forgot), there are some that doubt the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Wormley’s response? “Keep doubting. That’s ok.”
