We're roughly five full days into the Free Agency window, and Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster remains unsigned. Earlier this week, Yinzer Crazy spoke to sources close to JuJu that said they were optimistic about his return to Pittsburgh.
Today, Bleacher Report mentioned that the Chiefs, Packers, and Eagles were all interested in his services.
The Chiefs offered Smith-Schuster a contract last season, so they figured to still be in on him considering they just lost their steady number two wideout Byron Pringle to the Bears, and Kansas City could use another receiver to help take some attention off of their star Tyreek Hill.
The Packers traded all-world wideout Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders yesterday, in a shocker of a deal. Which means their current receiver room is in need of at least two more additions.
The Philadelphia Eagles have two 1st round picks, but have struggled to draft receivers - so JuJu could be signed so they don't have to risk taking another potential bust, like Jalen Reagor.
And then there's the Pittsburgh Steelers.
It's already been four seasons since JuJu posted a 1,426 yard receiving season, while playing next to Antonio Brown. In the last three years, he only has 1,512 receiving yards. But take this with a grain of salt: He nearly missed all of last season due to a shoulder injury. And in 2020, he essentially played a full season without Ben Roethlisberger, as Duck Hodges and Mason Rudolph had a see-saw battle at QB.
Last season, JuJu resigned with the Steelers on a 1-year, 8 million dollar, "prove it" type of deal. Generally players will take 1 year deals in an effort to lock up a long term contract after a productive season. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.
Because of that, the interest in JuJu seems to be sparse. At least in terms of the financials.
Our best guess is that Smith-Schuster is truly torn. His heart is in Pittsburgh, but he may have a higher offer on the table with the Kansas City Chiefs, which would give him the opportunity to play with Patrick Mahomes, or the Green Bay Packers, which would give him the chance to play with Aaron Rodgers.
