Welcome to the fourth installment of my Pittsburgh Steelers draft predictions. In my previous three shots at this thing, I’ve had Northern Iowa OT Trevor Penning (Mock 1.0), and Cincinnati QB Desmond Ridder (Mock’s 2 and 3.0) heading to the black & gold with the 20th overall selection.
Here’s something I want to promise yinz. I’m not going to be “that guy,” who mocks several players to the Steelers’ and then boasts “NAILED IT!” whenever the pick is in. I’ll have two more mocks before the real thing - this version 4.0, and next week’s final attempt.
Only the final draft counts,
but hopefully I don’t feel the need to change this one.
LISTEN as I broke down this mock in greater detail in the podcast above. Yes, this is a ploy to get you to click play and subscribe to our awesome podcast. And I think you’ll enjoy this episode, as I go back and forth with our Steelers’ contributor Noah Nichols, comparing and grading both of our mocks. Here is Noah's
Full Mock.
In this version, I shattered a self-imposed cardinal sin.
I projected a trade. I think I’ve previously said that this should be illegal. But I’m feeling dangerous. Screw it. This draft is going to be wildly unpredictable and fun. So let’s have some freaking fun.
Pick 20 - (RD 1) Devonte Wyatt DL Georgia
Every team should be obsessed with the Georgia draft prospects in the class. I think this pick ultimately comes down to who is left on the board between two Bulldogs - Jordan Davis and Wyatt. Davis, a Casey Hampton-like nose tackle, could be a 2-down player exclusively, which may push him down the board. But I’m guessing his combine showing, in which he somehow tested like Hall of Fame wide receiver Calvin Johnson, will vault him into the teens.
Wyatt has red flags - he’s 24 years old, and he also has reportedly been dropped on some draft boards due to character concerns.
But he was never suspended at Georgia. And his tape is off the charts. Also, I have no idea if Stephon Tuitt will be back. And I don’t think that the Steelers know either.
TRADE: The Steelers trade their 2023 1st round pick, and pick 84 (3rd round) to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for pick 27 overall, and pick 133 (4th round). Note *this trade was accepted in both mock-draft simulators I used (PFF & PFN)
Pick 27 - (RD 1 from Tampa Bay) Sam Howell QB North Carolina
Prior to this process, I'd heard that the Steelers prefer Howell to any QB in the draft. I think that’s probably changed with Willis as their 1A, but I'd guess part of the reason they’ve scouted 100 QB’s is so they can gauge a trade-back into the 1st round if they are comfortable with a few of them. Check out my full take above in the podcast.
Pick 52 (RD 2) - Justyn Ross WR Clemson
Ross has had physical setbacks, but the Steelers’ sent the band to Clemson, including WR Coach Frisman Jackson who reportedly put Ross through a private workout. He either learned one of two things - he's healthy and will thrive in the NFL, or they should avoid him entirely. I’ll choose the former. Plus, they have had success with Clemson receivers recently, drafting Martavis Bryant and picking up Ray-Ray McCloud.
Pick 133 (RD 4 From Tampa Bay) - Lecitus Smith OG Virginia Tech
The Steelers were busy addressing the OL in Free Agency, but they can’t stop there. Smith can play center as well as guard. How do I know? Because he told me! I keep going to the well. He’s a friend of the Yinzer Crazy podcast, and he’d be a really good pick here.
Listen to my full interview with Smith.
Pick 138 (RD 4) - Bubba Bolden S Miami
At this point, who knows what the team will do at strong safety to compliment Minkah Fitzpatrick long-term. If it’s Terrell Edmunds, my guess is he won’t be back on a long-term deal. If it’s Tyrann Mathieu or Damontae Kazee, it will be a short-term plug and play type contract. They met with Bolden at the combine, which is usually an easy way to connect the dots.
Pick 208 (RD 6) - Erik Ezukanma WR Texas Tech
Similar to Justyn Ross, Ezukanma is another big-bodied WR who is physical at the point of attack. He was used in jet-sweep packages a ton at Texas Tech, and sometimes even lined up in the backfield. That will appeal to Matt Canada, as the Steelers double-down on receivers.
Also, I’d really like to see yinzers pronounce his name.
No 7th round pick for me. Please don’t be angry about that. There’s enough in this mock that will rile you up.
