The Pittsburgh Pirates have begun their off-season with a couple of waiver wire pickups.
The Pirates have claimed catcher Ali Sánchez from the Detroit Tigers and pitcher Beau Sulser from the Baltimore Orioles.
The Pirates have also designated catcher José Godoy for assignment.
Ali Sánchez, 25, is a career minor league catcher with very little experience in the MLB. In 291 PA in AAA this season, Sánchez batted .262 with 6 HR, 33 RBI, .354 OBP, .389 SLG, .743 OPS, and 101 wRC+. He also threw out 34% of base runners in 2022, 44% in his minor league career.
Beau Sulser, 28, made his major league debut with Pittsburgh before being DFA’d and claimed by Baltimore. Now he has been claimed and is returning to the Pirates roster. In 2022 with Pittsburgh and Baltimore, Sulser put up a 3.63 ERA in 22.1 IP, 19 SO, 4.50 FIP, and 1.48 WHIP.
José Godoy, 28, appeared in 10 MLB games in 2022 and batted .050 with 1 RBI. Godoy was not productive with Pittsburgh resulting in being designated for assignment.
Now with the additions of Sánchez and Susler, the Pirates 40 man roster is full.
