While the entire fanbase of the Pittsburgh Pirates is awaiting a big trade for Edward Cabrera, the Pirates sign another pitcher to the organization. Chase Anderson has agreed to a minor league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. This contract includes an invitation to Spring Training.
Anderson is a 36-year-old veteran who has had a decent career but has struggled in recent years. Last year, Anderson pitched for the Tampa Bay Rays and Colorado Rockies. He saw most of his innings pitched in Colorado but bounced between the majors and minors in the Rockies organization.
Anderson is not quite what he used to be, but there is a little life to some of his pitches. Three of his pitches are still quite effective. His changeup is the most effective pitch in his arsenal as opponents have a .163 batting average against it. The whiff percentage on his changeup is 28.3% which is the best out of any of his pitches. His sweeper is also very effective as opposing batters have a batting average of .172 against it.
Last season with the Rockies and Rays, Anderson posted an earned run average of 5.42 in 86.1 innings pitched with 64 strikeouts. He also had a 5.72 FIP and a 0.2 WAR. Despite not pitching great in 2023, he was still considered to be a positive WAR player.
This signing is not the big pitcher that we are seeking. This is just for depth through our organization. He will likely begin the year in Indianapolis, the Pirates AAA affiliate. Although this is not the Edward Cabrera signing, this is still significant for the organization.
Welcome to the Pirates, Chase!
