All good things must come to an end, and it appears that we are at the end of the line for Heinz Field. The stadium will still be there, and the Steelers and Panthers will still be playing their football games there, but it will be under a new name, as Heinz has chosen not to extend their naming rights to the field.
This report comes from Pittsburgh sports personality Andrew Fillipponi on Twitter, and according to him, a new name could be announced for the field this week. (https://twitter.com/ThePoniExpress/status/1546313273448058880)
Back in February Steelers President Art Rooney II was confident that a new deal would be reached to keep the stadium’s iconic name, but it seems as if that deal has now fallen through.
The stadium opened in 2001 and has been the home for football in Pittsburgh ever since. In that time the Steelers won two super bowls, and had countless other thrilling moments at Heinz Field.
Originally the naming agreement was set to expire last year, but Heinz agreed to extend it for another year to keep their name on the building.
It will mark the first time since the Steelers last played at Three Rivers Stadium that the home games won’t be played at Heinz Field.
While a new sponsor has yet to be announced a potential suitor could be UPMC who already hold the name of the Steelers practice facility on the South Side.
It is also strangely fitting that the last Steelers quarterback to play a game at Heinz Field was Ben Roethlisberger, it seems like one could not exist without the other.
No matter what the name is, it will be just the latest in a long line of changes for Steelers fans to get used to this coming season.
