SP Domingo German Inks Minors Deal with Bucs

Earlier in the week I wrote about three starting pitchers the Pirates should consider. Of the three starting pitchers I mentioned, Domingo German was one of the three. As of Friday evening, Domingo German has agreed to a minor league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates worth $1.25 million with a team option for 2025 that is worth $2.25 million.

German is a 32 year old right handed pitcher who has pitched with the New York Yankees his entire career. Last year, German became the first Dominican pitcher to throw a perfect game. Although throwing a perfect game is very impressive, this signing is a little risky.

This signing is risky because of German's off-field issues during his career. He was suspended in 2019 for a domestic violence case with his girlfriend. In 2023, he dealt with alcohol problems that caused altercations with coaches and players, along with missed time with rehabilitation. 

This was a bit of a concern for the Pirates front office, but according to reports last night, they were able to conclude that he was good to pitch for the Pirates in 2024, German must earn his spot with work on and off the field. I love this approach by the Pirates because the bigger picture here is to get German well with his alcohol addiction. The reward with his recovery is to pitch in the majors. Although this is a signing that will be criticized for many reasons, this looks like a win-win for both parties. 

Last season, German did one of the best things a pitcher can do. That is to throw a perfect game. His stats were also decent. In 19 games started, German posted an earned run average of 4.56 in 108.2 innings pitched with 114 strikeouts. He also had a 1.08 WHIP and a 4.65 FIP. 

German can be a solid pitcher for the Pirates, but to have a spot in the rotation, he must earn it. That is a good approach by the Pirates here. I am happy we added another established starter to this team and I am hoping German recovers well. This goes for him as a person, not just as a baseball player.
