One of the biggest questions this offseason for the Pittsburgh Steelers is if they would pay All-Pro safety, Minkah Fitzpatrick. There was little doubt the Steelers would, but it would more or less be how much they would be giving him with TJ Watt receiving an enormous contract worth $112M for 4 years.
The questions lingered. Would they be able to pay Fitzpatrick? Would Fitzpatrick even accept the money offered to him? It's a stressful time for the front office and fans alike. But on Wednesday, the Steelers finally got their answer.
Minkah Fitzpatrick signed a 4-year extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers worth $73.6M and about $36M guaranteed. A historical signing that makes Fitzpatrick the highest-paid safety in the NFL. The former Miami Dolphin made his presence known in Pittsburgh early on after the trade. In his first game as a Steeler, he would get his first interception in black & gold. He would then get 4 interceptions, 1 fumble recovery, and a pick six -- all in a three-game stretch. He hasn't produced eye-popping statistics since then, but that's because QBs have learned never to throw his way. For the past two seasons, he had six interceptions. He also was a tackling machine as he made 84 tackles, the 12th highest amount of tackles in the league.
The Steelers needed the former Alabama Crimson Tide star to heavily assist the secondary and this is a huge signing for the Steelers as a whole. But a few questions remain. Will Fitzpatrick retain his elite play going into 2022? What does this mean for star receiver Diontae Johnson who still has yet to be signed? What about other players like Cameron Sutton or Chris Boswell, will they be signed as well as they too enter free agency next year? The Steelers have signed the future of their defense but still many questions to be answered for the future of their franchise as a whole.
