Steelers place five on Covid List - What does it mean?

Yinzer Crazy • November 10, 2020
This morning the team’s official twitter account announced that they have placed the following players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

OL Jerald Hawkins
RB Jaylen Samuels
LB Vince Williams
QB Ben Roethlisberger

This follows last night’s announcement that TE Vance McDonald had been placed on the Covid-19 list with a confirmed case.

If you hadn’t already seen the tweet, I apologize for putting Ben last.

You probably were thinking, “oh, no biggie!” - until you scanned that name.

But what does it all mean?

Fortunately for us, we have a recent example that we can help us draw from.

That was when Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford was placed on the Covid-19 list on Tuesday of last week - and still ended up starting the game for the Lions on Minnesota on Sunday.

The NFL has implemented a policy where a player must have a mandatory five-day isolation period if he is deemed to be in close contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19.

Stafford ultimately passed a number of tests on Saturday, leading the Lions to activate him prior to the contest on Sunday following the isolation time.

So it likely means that the Steelers determined the aforementioned players are the most “at risk” stemming from close contact to Vance McDonald.

Of course there is a risk that they could ultimately contract the virus - or have already.

My biggest question is this:

Wouldn’t everyone on the offense be considered close contact to Vance given the fact that he played a large number of snaps on Sunday?

I’m not going to get into the semantics of how all of that works - because I simply don’t know.

Let's just hope everyone is ok.

The Steelers best case scenario would be to have Roethlisberger rest all week and ultimately be cleared and then take the field on Sunday against the Bengals after not logging any practice time with his teammates this week.

But does a 17 year vet really need it?

Especially after being battered and bruised against the Cowboys.

We’ll continue to monitor the story - but for now, don’t panic.

Even if Mason Rudolph has to play - it is just the Bengals.
