The Steelers have made a bunch of good and bad decisions in the NFL Draft - but what team hasn't? The 6th-round pick of the legendary Antonio Brown in 2010, and the 4th-round pick of Martavis Bryant in 2014, are two good ones that come to mind (of course, one was Hall-of-Fame worthy). But for every Brown and Bryant, there is a Limas Sweed and Jarvis Jones. If those guys were drafted in the late rounds, they would be less infamous, but they came in the early rounds. The last 5 years have treated the Steelers well for the future, as they aim to be in seventh heaven. Let's take a look at the steals the Steelers have had since 2017:
2017 Draft: 3rd Round CB Cameron Sutton
The Steelers NEEDED secondary help in this draft with the decline of William Gay, and Artie Burns not proving to be worth the 1st round pick in 2016. Cameron Sutton had a slow start in his first 2 years in the league, but has gotten better as the years go on, and has proven as a possible starter on the roster of young and upcoming corners. He is still improving will be a solid slot corner behind Witherspoon & Wallace.
2018 Draft: 3rd Round OT Chukwuma Okorafor
Back again with the 3rd round, the Steelers are currently in need of an improved offensive line. The Steelers needed some players to step up and Okorafor has stepped up. A clear starter on the offensive line, he played 1078 snaps last season and only allowed 2 sacks. Still young and able to develop to a top-tier offensive tackle, Okorafor could become elite as time goes on. If he works on the disciplinary side of things, he could become a premier tackle in this league.
2019 Draft: 5th Round TE Zach Gentry
Now while he hasn't gotten much playing time, Gentry has shown flashes on offense, and he and Freiermuth have become a unique pairing. Freiermuth has the hands to catch and Gentry has the hands to block. The film has shown Zach has the ability to block defenders and with a struggling line, Gentry's skills are much welcomed in Matt Canada's offense. He has shown to be good when his number is called and plus he helps with depth in the TE room. Plus the guy is 6'8. His size could be used as a big factor.
2020 Draft: 3rd Round OLB Alex Highsmith
The departure of Bud Dupree hurt the Steelers considering he was just getting into the prime of his career and he and TJ Watt were a scary duo on the defensive outsides. The addition of Highsmith helped out and he has proved to be a promising OLB the more he goes into his career. He had more tackles than Watt last season, and compiled 6 sacks and a forced fumble. There is great potential in Highsmith, and he and Watt will be another scary duo that QBs will fear for a long time in the AFC.
2021 Draft: 7th Round P Pressley Harvin III
Now a punter may not be the most exciting position to be a steal for but man, you can't tell me coffin corner punts are not satisfying and can be a game-changer! Harvin had 25 coffin corner punts in his rookie year, 10th in the league. Only 3 touchbacks and while he didn't have a perfect year, he definitely showed flashes. It was also revealed that he had personal issues off the field and the hope is he can once again turn into the player that turned the Steelers' heads at Georgia Tech.
