There is no secret sauce to the game of football but there are certainly plenty of winning formulas. A winning formula can come from a variety of areas. To name a couple you can have the most physical team and just dominate in all three phases of the game, or you can have a very good game plan and throw the opposing team off, which ruins the body of work they put in that week. Neither of those ways are how the Steelers have got it done over the past three years.
The Steelers under Matt Canada have had to be bailed out and pray for TJ Watt and company to force turnovers time and time again because the offense is inept to scoring points.
So how do the Steelers start turning this little toy car of an offense into an absolute wagon? According to Kenny Pickett, Calvin Austin, Mason Cole, etc. they need to “execute” more. Now I am not delusional, I know Kenny has played poorly, and not up to standard, but that does not create a pass for a coordinator when people at home and on defense know exactly what you’ll be running on most downs. Where the team needs to start “executing” is at the top. The coaching. If coaching can for once scheme creative plays to get guys open and throw defenses off even just a little, it’ll start to turn the tides.
When coaching creates proper gameplays, it makes executing those plans easier and gives the offense more of a general flow. Also, sometimes it's easy to forget - it also allows your defense to take a deep breath every once in a while. Kenny needs to clean up his game and navigate the pocket better and that will come, we saw that with the 71-yard catch and run by George Pickens all set up by Kenny not panicking and hanging in there. As the season goes on the newer pieces such as Austin and Allen Robinson will gain more confidence - and you would hope in turn create more fluidity in the offense to maybe score 30+ at some point.
I truly believe that the offense just needs one “break out” game to create that momentum. But it has never happened in the Matt Canada tenure. They've never recorded over 400 yards in a single game under his tutelage.
It does all start with coaching, and they need to take accountability or bring some new minds in to help immediately, because if this team with the leaders it has does not make a playoff run, fans might stop coming to watch their team struggle to put up 20 points a game.
