Ladies and gentlemen, there's a storm coming that even the weatherman couldn't predict!
The Steelers QB room has become an intense battle. Before training camp started, it was widely regarded that former Bears and Bills QB, Mitchell Trubisky, would be the starter going into week 1. Then as training camp went on, rumors floated that former 3rd round pick, Mason Rudolph, would be a contender for the starting job. But the preseason games have begun to tell a different story. The standout wasn't Rudolph, who was impressive in the second week of the preseason but didn't show a lot in the first week. And the standout wasn't Trubisky, who wouldn't get a ton of playing time in his first two preseason games. It was the rookie, Kenny Pickett!
Pickett out of the two other QBs, Rudolph & Trubisky, didn't have the greatest chance to start week 1. With Rudolph knowing the system better than any other QB on the roster, and Trubisky being the most experienced and a former pro bowl QB with playoff appearances under his belt, Pickett was to be held back until the right time. But now, we may not have to wait very long for Pickett to start his career as the franchise signal caller.
Pickett has lit up the defenses of the Seahawks and Jaguars. While those two teams don't exactly have the best defenses - and not a ton of starters were playing, Pickett is still a rookie and showed some flashes of true starter potential. He's thrown for 3 touchdowns, 171 yards, no interceptions, and only 3 incompletions. Woah! Pickett is turning some heads, and even Coach Tomlin has put it into consideration to start him in week 1. It all comes down to the accomplished veteran QB Mitchell Trubisky vs. the rising star rookie QB Kenny Pickett.
Coach Tomlin has said it all comes down to how the final preseason game versus the Detroit Lions and practice goes. There are a few pros and cons to both decisions of the coin. Week 1 will be up against reigning AFC Champs, the Cincinnati Bengals. Now while the Bengals don't have the best defense, they're still very dangerous. Trubisky would be the safest decision but at the same time, would he play as well as Pickett would? If Pickett shines, it could be the start of the Pickett era, or if he struggles, it could destroy his confidence.
Tons of pros and cons going into the start of the season regarding the Steelers QB room. Especially since Tomlin hasn't had to decide this, because he was hired with Big Ben at the helm. Though he had a similar situation between Devlin "Duck" Hodges and Mason Rudolph when Ben went down with an injury in 2019, where the QBs often flip-flopped when the other struggled, it wasn't nearly the same. Would that be how the Steelers play the QB room this year or will there be a clear-cut starter for the rest of the season? A lot of questions look to be answered with the work Trubisky and Pickett will put in as the regular season gears closer.
