Who is New Steelers OL Coach Pat Meyer?

After a much-anticipated wait, the Steelers finally selected their coach for the offensive line: Pat Meyer. He has been in football for over 20 years and most recently served under Matt Rhule’s Carolina Panthers. The move has a lot of Steelers fans asking the big question: Who is Pat Meyer and why isn’t he Mike Munchak?

In all seriousness, the move is certainly an eye-opening one. During his last two jobs, his offensive lines have had some really good performances and some really poor ones. However, the poorest-looking job might not have been completely on his shoulders.

Panthers’ leaders Matt Rhule and Joe Brady had no idea what they were doing. Matt Rhule ultimately made Joe Brady the fall guy. Rhule shuffled 3-4 different quarterbacks in an absolutely embarrassing fashion. Can we really blame Meyer completely for the disaster in Carolina?

Panthers tenure aside, one thing that has been an encouraging trend is the rush success rate—with none of them ranking less than 15th since his full-time status in 2017 (per PFF.) This would certainly be a positive trend to come the Steelers way.

Pat Meyer started his coaching career at Memphis as a graduate assistant—coming in a year after Mike Tomlin served the same role at Memphis. He would later be promoted to Strength and Conditioning Coach and serve the same role at three more schools.

He got his first NFL job with the Chicago Bears as an assistant offensive line coach after serving time in the CFL. He would serve time with the Bills and got his first full-time position coaching and run game coordinator role with the Chargers in 2017 until the end of the 2019 season.

Pat Meyer is a well-respected coach in the league and will have a lot on his plate. With only two (at most) solidified starters on the line, he will have to work with Matt Canada on getting a new combination of offensive linemen ready for the 2022 season.

Time will tell on this hire—however, this isn’t an internal promotion. The Steelers have someone with some full-time experience and a respectable track record.
