Walter Camp was a student at Yale University in 1879 when the school brought football in for their students. A year later, Camp put the wheels in motion to change football to what we know it today. At the time, teams were made up of a large number of players who all played on the field at the same time. Because of this, and a lack of rules and organization, the games often turned violent. He started revising the rules and over the next few years, he made a variety of changes to the game. Among them were the addition of a quarterback, the line of scrimmage, eleven-player teams, the forward pass, the neutral zone, the use of downs, and the point system.
From 1896-1923, Camp wrote 42 books and over 200 articles educating the world about the game of football. With all of his achievements, Walter Camp grew to be known as the Father of American Football. Since then, football has come a long way. Here are 12 memorable moments all football fans can enjoy.
