5 Key Steelers To Watch This Season

The draft has concluded and the Pittsburgh Steelers 2022 roster is taking shape. Whether it's a new addition to the team, recent draft selections that will help other players shine, or just players on a prove-it year - there's going to be plenty of eyeballs on a handful of dudes. Let's take a look at five key players to keep an eye on going into the 2022 season.

#5: Mitch Trubisky

The Steelers created a lot of buzz this offseason in their next quarterback search with the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger. The signing of Trubisky was a smart one. He wasn't too expensive compared to the other QBs on the market, and he could be a serviceable QB since he just left Buffalo, the same team that developed one of the best QBs in the league in Josh Allen. There's also the fact that he is a former pro-bowler, so there is some evident talent. He's also been to the playoffs, so it's not like he doesn't have experience in big-time situations. Worst case scenario is that he doesn't perform well and gets benched, or is a solid backup to compliment Kenny Pickett.

Speaking of Kenny Pickett...

#4 Kenny Pickett

It's kind of a given that a player to watch is also a rookie because you never know exactly how he'll turn out. But the hype is real for the former Pitt QB, as he looks to win for his city once again. Pickett had an incredible senior year at Pitt, throwing for 42 touchdowns and over 4000 yards, with only 7 interceptions. And who can forget the viral fake slide against Wake Forest. He also broke Dan Marino's records at Pitt, which certainly speaks for itself.

#3 George Pickens

Another rookie who has a lot of potential, Pickens was selected in the second round. Something that the Steelers have been consistently good at is drafting star receivers such as Chase Claypool, Diontae Johnson, Juju Smith-Schuster, and Antonio Brown, outside of the first round. Pickens has been described as having a "vice-like grip when it comes to catching the rock, and good focus catching it in traffic. Standing at 6'3, he also showed great speed with a 4.47 time at the combine. Pickens will fit in fine with a stacked receiving core complimented by Claypool and Johnson -- and with another speedy rookie receiver in Calvin Austin III.

#2 Devin Bush

When I say Steelers players to watch, I don't necessarily mean that you'll feel great watching them. Devin Bush looked like a star linebacker his rookie year and could be a legit game-changer. But sadly, in 2020, he tore his ACL and spent the rest of the year on IR. Coming back in 2021, Bush had a lot of eyes on him, but it didn't even seem like he was the same guy. A lot of people believe it had to do with his ACL tear. He's now playing on a contract year, as the Steelers declined his 5th-year option. Bush has a lot to prove this year; can he prove the doubters wrong and be the star linebacker the Steelers traded up for? He controls his own destiny.

#1 Najee Harris

Najee Harris was one of the bright spots on a struggling Steelers offense that was in the bottom ten of total offensive yards last season. He posted 1200 yards, seven TDs, and a whole lotta stiff arms. But the offensive line he was behind was a bottom NFL-tier line, allowing the sixth most amount of pressures in the league last year. The only reason they weren't ranked any lower was because of Roethlisberger's 2.20 seconds per pass. But the Steelers have improved the offensive line this offseason with the signings of James Daniels, Mason Cole, combined with the likely improvements of young players like Dan Moore Jr., Kevin Dotson, and Chukwuma Okorafor. Harris posted great stats with a struggling offensive line, imagine what he can do with a good offensive line.

The sky's the limit for most of these players, which is great for the Steelers.
