If the NFL regular season is the main course for football fans, the preseason acts as an amusing appetizer. It whets the palate for football fans for the more filling meal of the 18-week NFL season. While franchises see some value in the preseason in terms of talent evaluation and preparation, it varies between fan bases when it comes to viewership.

To continue the analogy, most Steelers fans pass on the appetizer, and are only concerned with the main course, and desert, meaning the regular or post season. In recent years however, desert has been few and far between, and unappetizing. Even the main course has been underwhelming as in the past several years.

If the Steelers were a restaurant, they would be going through a major rehaul of menu changes, a new head chef, and wait staff. Ben Roethlisberger has retired, and several new additions have arrived. This leads to Steelers fans being inclined to try the appetizer for the first time in a long time.

To conclude the analogy, Steelers fans used to know just what to expect, but updates to the restaurant necessitates trying the appetizer of the preseason, to get an idea of how the main course of the regular season is going to go.

The most obvious position Steelers fans will be looking for is Quarterback. While the assumption is that Mitchell Trubisky will be the week one starter, the preseason will tease the likelihood of Kenny Pickett taking over at some point in the year. Kenny Pickett will be a draw all on his own for the Steelers.

Being the first QB taken in the first round by the franchise in 18 years brings a spotlight. Steelers fans will flock to Preseason football to see how Pickett is going to operate in Matt Canada’s offense, and how he can hold up in NFL-like situations. And if he can throw an NFL football with his petite hands (just kidding).

However, the QB position isn’t the only position Steelers fans will be paying attention too. They will be looking for George Pickens, the newest addition to the WR core, and if he can bring the same physicality to Pittsburgh he did to Georgia. It will be compelling to see how he will operate with the other pass catchers and what role he will take on.

Steelers fans will also pay attention to Chase Claypool in preseason, to see if he improves from his sophomore slump, and if some of his antics have dissipated. Diontae Johnson will also be under the preseason spotlight considering his demand for an improved contract.

Devin Bush, who has been the topic of conversation during the entire offseason, will need to show some flashes in the preseason. Bush left a lot to be desired after his struggles last season, and Steelers fans will be focused on his performance alongside Myles Jack and under the coaching of Brian Flores.

Overall, the Pittsburgh Steelers are taking on an entirely new look and many Steelers fans don’t know what to expect. There will be new pieces on both sides of the field and will be the first time Big Ben will not be under center. For the first time, in a long time, Steelers fans will be clamoring to their TVs for preseason football.
