Background. A pleasantly scenic hour and twenty minute drive South along I-79 from Pittsburgh is Morgantown, WV. Among these Western Appalachian foothills lies the home and main campus of West Virginia University, all campuses and extensions combining for just under 30,000 total enrollment. Offering over 350 degree programs in both undergraduate and graduate study, the University boasts 64 Fulbright and 24 Rhodes Scholars. A biometric research effort is conducted in cooperation with the FBI. Noteworthy graduates number John Chambers, Chairman and CEO of Cisco Systems; Don Notts of popular TV entertainment; and Jerry West, Hall of Fame basketball standout in both college and the NBA, regarded by some as the greatest all-around hoops star of all time and whose image is used as the NBA logo. The University also manages to field a NCAA football team, over the last decade competing in the Big 12 Conference along with the likes of Oklahoma and Texas. The Old Gold and Blue name 60,000 seat capacity Milan Puskar Stadium as its home field, so named in honor of Morgantown resident and Mylan Laboratories founder and his $20 million donation in 2004 to the overall cause.
Program History. Recent decades have served the faithful with some praiseworthy success. Head Coach Don Nehlen guided the 1988 team through an Independent 10-0 campaign before succumbing to Notre Dame in the National Championship tussle in the Fiesta Bowl, finishing with the #5 rank in the Associated Press post season poll. Moving to Big East competition in 1993, Nehlen again went unbeaten in regular season play before falling in the Sugar Bowl and holding the 7th rung in the AP finals. Rich Rodriguez led teams to three consecutive years of excellence from 2005 to 2007, capped with victories in major Bowl games and Top 10 standings in post season polling. But since then results have been trending disappointingly lower, with Neal Brown Big 12 squads at break-even in his initial three years at the coaching helm beginning 2019, unable to penetrate a National ranking. Looking now ahead to a Sep 1 7:00PM season liftoff on the road at Pitt, an Oct 1 road date at Texas and a Thursday night Oct 13 hosting of Baylor, should loyalist season ticket holders and boosters adopt a sense of optimism?
Returning Strengths. Anchored by 2nd Team Walter Camp All-American 6’3” 306 pounder Zach Frazier at Center, the OL returns all five of last year’s starters. Frazier will team with All-American tackle 6’6” 273 pounder Wyatt Milum; at 6’7” and 320 pound Doug Nester; and 6’3” 310 pounds out of Bethel Park, PA James Gmiter at guard slots; and 6’4” weighing in at 308 Brandon Yates at the other tackle.
Complacency should not set in with talented and promising youngsters poised on the depth chart. On the other side of the ball is a trio of solid defensive linemen back for another year: 47 career game veteran at 6’4” and 285 pounds Dante Stills; Canadian native and All Big 12 Honorable Mention at 6’2” and 272 lbs Akheem Mesidor; and 6’4” 255 pounds of Taijh Alston, who ranked 2nd on the 2021 team in Tackles for Loss, are eager and ready to suit up. Brown and Staff will not state it explicitly, but fine Spring Drill play among each of their linemen open the possibility that line of scrimmage play will stamp the 2022 Mountaineers.
Moving the Ball, Scoring the Points. Advancing from scrimmage and ultimately crossing opponent goal lines will initially be the responsibility of:
Coaching.
As noted above, Neal Brown’s three seasons as WVU’s sideline helmsman have yielded essentially break-even results. Yet a history of excellence supports his incumbency. His final three Seasons at Troy University in Alabama generated an overall 31-8 record, including 22 wins over the final 26 kickoffs. A Sun Belt Conference championship blended with a Dollar General Bowl triumph and Neal’s 2017 receipt of Coach of the Year honors. He was one of only six FBS coaches to rack up 10 or more wins in three consecutive seasons ending 2018. As the Mountaineers compete in a stiffer conference it remains to be seen if Neal can recapture the magic.
Improvement is rightfully expected heading into 2022.
