Story by Yinzer Crazy Pirates Contributor Baron Dionis
After a quiet Christmas for most MLB teams, the Pirates signed left handed pitcher Rich Hill to a one year contract worth $8 Million.
Hill, 42, is currently the oldest active player in Major League Baseball. Turning 43 in March, Hill is entering his 19th season in the MLB. This will also be the 9th team Hill has pitched for in his long career. He will be joining a rotation of pitchers that are all at least 12 years younger than him. The next oldest pitcher on the roster is recently signed Vince Velasquez at the age of 30.
In 2022, Hill started in all 26 games he pitched in. In 124.1 innings pitched, Hill went 8-7 and had a 4.27 ERA with 109 strikeouts. He also had a 1.30 WHIP, 3.92 FIP, 1.8 WAR, and a .258 opponent batting average.
With this signing, the Pirates starting rotation finally gets a left handed pitcher. Recently acquired Jose Hernandez is the only other left handed pitcher on the 40 man roster and he will be in the bullpen on opening day. We are also awaiting for veteran lefty, Jarlin Garcia to sign officially with the Pirates after reportedly signing during the winter meetings.
How do you feel about the signing?
Welcome to Pittsburgh, Rich!
