The annual MLB trade deadline is almost here and the Pirates have made their first transaction. Carlos Santana has been traded to the Milwaukee Brewers for 18 year old shortstop Jhonny Severino.
Carlos Santana signed a one year deal this past off-season with the Pirates worth $6.7 million. This season Santana was the main cleanup hitter for the Pirates and exceeded expectations.
At 37 years old, Santana hit 12 home runs and had a team leading 53 runs batted in. He also was an outstanding defender which we saw all year. As much as we all enjoyed watching him play, he is on a one year contract and it was great to get something out of him as he will be a free agent after the season ends.
Jhonny Severino is an 18 year old middle infield prospect out of the Dominican Republic. The number 21 rated international prospect in the 2022 class was signed by the Brewers for $1.23 million.
Severino is known for power in his bat at such a young age. In the Arizona Complex League this season, Severino has hit four home runs in just 12 games. MLB Pipeline rates his power at a 55 on a 20-80 grade scale.
Overall the Pirates traded a veteran on an expiring contract and got a young lottery ticket type of prospect. I think that it’s good that we got something out of Santana as he is 37 years old and his contract is expiring at the end of the season. We will see in a few years what Severino can do as he is only 18 years old.
