There is no question depth on a roster is one of the most important parts of the game. If you do not have depth at a position, opposing teams can pick you apart in that area and build a gameplay around it. Is it possible to have too many weapons for opposing defense's to plan for?! When it comes to the Steelers 2023/2024 receivers room, absolutely.
As much as George Pickens blasted on to the scene, the number one receiver is still Diontae Johnson. Diontae is always working and sharpening his skills, from reaction timing, route running and contested catches. Opposing team's have to worry about Dionte’s incredible footwork and ability to make the secondary miss tackles on YAC.
When it comes to “put it in the sky” George Pickens takes the crown of contested catches. Teams have to essentially gameplay for knocking the ball down before it touches George’s fingertips or they are going to be put on another highlight reel and another Moss to Pickens’ resume. After year one, and already putting the league on notice, George Pickens will continue to be a nightmare for opposing defensive coordinators in the film room and on game day.
“You can’t teach speed, everything else in the game can be taught but speed is a gift from god.” Raiders' Al Davis had this famous quote and the man that embodies speed is Calvin Austin. Austin’s rookie season got put on hold from injury but going into the new campaign he seems healthier than ever and ready to make his mark immediately on this team with shifty route running and burner type speed to help this team go vertical more often.
The man to tie it all together is Allen Robinson. Coming off a down year with the Rams, Robinson will look to make an immediate impact to this team with a huge catch radius and redzone threat ability. He also offers good veteran leadership to a younger group and will help teach and mold the unit into one that has the makings to be the most deadly and most complete in the NFL.
