If one were to Google “ACC Men’s Basketball Standings” right now, they'd see the University of Pittsburgh at the top.
Pitt Basketball is in first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
To give you an idea of how much Pitt has defied the odds this season, let’s take a look at a few things. Before the season began, Pitt hoops were
ranked 14th out of 15 teams in the Preseason ACC rankings. Only Georgia Tech University, which should probably stick to engineering, was ranked behind them. Additionally, not one Pitt player got a single vote (out of 101 total votes) for Preseason Player of the Year, All-ACC First Team, or All-ACC Second Team.
Not only will there likely be multiple Pitt players on the ALL-ACC First Team and Second Team, but junior Blake Hinson and senior Jamarious Burton have a good shot at winning ACC Player of the Year.
Since Pitt joined the ACC 9 years ago, nobody has come close to achieving this award. Former Pitt players Brandin Knight and DeJuan Blair won Big East Player of the Year in 2001 and 2008 respectively.
This season is going so well for Pitt in fact that during halftime, I watched as a Pitt student cocked back and swished a full-court shot to receive free housing for an entire year. There’s some magic in the air for fans and players of Pitt basketball it seems.

With the best time of the year for college basketball right around the corner, ah yes I’m talking about March Madness, the Panthers have gotten hot at the perfect time. On Saturday, Pitt exploded for 99 points in a near-flawless performance against The Syracuse Orange, winning the game 99-82.
If Pitt takes care of business vs The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (who have lost 7 games in a row), then the last game of the regular season will be vs The Miami Hurricanes on Saturday, March 4th.
If all goes according to plan for Pitt, that game vs Miami will be to determine who is crowned the ACC Regular Season Title outright.
It’s been nearly 20 years since Pitt won a conference title. Actually, my younger brother was born on the day that Pitt won the Big East on March 15th, 2003. He’s now a sophomore in college. I was very young, but I still remember everybody gathered around the TV in West Penn Hospital, as Pitt downed The Connecticut Huskies 74-56 in the Big East Conference Championship Game.
I don’t think my mother will be giving birth to another sibling this time, but history may repeat itself for Pitt hoops regarding winning a title.
