No, you are not dreaming; you read that right. The Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator since 2021 has been relieved of his duties. Fans rejoice as the offense has been severely lacking for years now. How bad has it been? Let's review the history of Canada's hiring as OC in 2021.

Before 2021, Canada served as the quarterback's coach before being promoted due to Randy Fichtner's contract not being renewed. The 2021 season would be the best season statistically for Matt Canada, but remember, he had veteran QB Ben Roethlisberger. In 2021, the Steelers offense ranked 23rd in total yards, 21st in total points, 29th in rushing yards, 15th in passing yards, and 24th in first downs. They ended up going 9-7-1, making the playoffs but being convincingly outed by the Chiefs. Keep in mind when I say this was Matt Canada's best season. Without his security blanket, Ben Roethlisberger, would Canada get better? Why do you think we're making this article?

With a new QB at the helm, Kenny Pickett, Matt Canada would be tasked with developing the new franchise quarterback. The season would start horrendously with a 2-6 start and people giving up on Kenny Pickett early on and wanting Matt Canada's head. But a good late-season stretch saved the offensive coordinator with a 7-2 finish to the season, and the Steelers offense looked somewhat competent. The Steelers 2022 offense ranked 23rd in total yards, 26th in total points, 16th in rushing yards, 24th in passing yards, and 15th in first downs. They ended up going 9-8, JUST missing the playoffs. Fans were hopeful for the future of Kenny Pickett but have yet to be convinced Canada should remain OC, but the front office kept him around for 2023.

Even though it's the 2023 season, it's imperative to note the offensive rankings right now before week twelve. The Steelers are 6-4, but this is despite the offense. And for reasons unknown to man, the Steelers have been outgained by nearly 900 yards and are still in a playoff spot. How have they done it? Let's review some of the wins—Steelers vs. Browns, two defensive touchdowns; Steelers vs. Raiders, three interceptions; Steelers vs. Ravens, audible by Kenny Pickett, led to a game-winning touchdown. Yes, there were some games with good playcalling and plays, but even a clock is right twice a day. If those games didn't have those key plays, the Steelers would likely be 3-7. The 2023 Steelers offense currently ranks 30th in total yards, 28th in total points, 16th in rushing yards, 32nd in passing yards, and 31st in first downs. It is truly a sight to behold. And that leads us to today, the morning of November 21st; it is 8:41 AM, and the Steelers social media has posted a statement from Coach Mike Tomlin:

"Matt Canada has been relieved of his duties as offensive coordinator. I appreciate Matt's hard work and dedication, and I wish him the best moving forward in his career."

Ladies and gentlemen, the war is over. This is the first time the Steelers have made a midseason coaching change since 1941, when half-owner Bert Bell fired himself. The Steelers were 1-9-1 back then. It is rumored the OC will now be running backs coach Eddie Faulkner, with QB coach Mike Sullivan handling play-calling duties. We'll see how it all plays out as the Steelers prep to go into the jungle against the Bengals on Sunday, November 26th. Can the offense get better or somehow worse? How will this affect Kenny Pickett's progression? Can the Steelers make the playoffs? We'll find out as the weeks pass by. Happy Thanksgiving week, Steeler Nation!
