If there’s one thing the Pittsburgh Steelers know how to do extremely well that is win Super Bowls.

They have six - tied with the New England Patriots for the most league leaders in knuckle bling.

Part of that success is attributed to the fact that they often do something else extremely well - and that’s draft good wide receivers.

From John Stallworth to Hines Ward to Antonio Brown to Diontae Johnson - Steelers General Managers’ and their scouting departments have consistently found terrific talent outside of the 1st round in NFL Drafts.

That story should be no different with Sammie Coates.

Coates was selected by the Steelers in the 3rd round of the 2015 Draft out of Auburn.

When he came to the Steelers, the wide-receiver room was already full of promise - led by Antonio Brown, Markus Wheaton, and second year player at the time Martavis Bryant.

But the team was confident enough in Coates abilities to bring him into the mix.

When healthy, he proved them right.

As a rookie in 2015 Coates was thrust into a starting role in an AFC Divisional playoff game at Denver after Antonio Brown was knocked out by Vontaze Burfict the week prior in a wild win at Cincinnati.

Coates hauled in two passes from Ben Roethlisberger for 61 yards - no easy feat in your first year in such a prominent game.

In 2016, just his second year in the league he really started to find himself as a player.

In week five against the Jets, Coates had 6 catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns.

He was the best player on the field that day.

He also suffered an injury in the contest, fracturing his left index finger late in the game.

A wide receiver breaking a finger is like a Limo driver with a broken right foot.

You can’t really do all that much.

He struggled to get healthy for the next year plus and was eventually traded to Cleveland in 2017.

Coates went on to play a season with the Browns where he wasn’t able to find much success, and was eventually cut.

He joined us on the Yinzer Crazy Podcast to talk about all of this and much more.

The receiver who may be misremembered around Pittsburgh or labeled as a “bust” sat down with the Yinzer Crazy boys to talk about why that shouldn’t be the case.

He also dishes on his time in the locker room with Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant and what that experience was like.

And he discusses how being traded to the Browns impacted him emotionally.

Check out the podcast above to find out his answers to those questions and more as we dig deep on the Yinzer Crazy show with Sammie Coates.
