According to Jets insider for the NY Daily News Manish Mehta, the Steelers are close to acquiring inside-linebacker Avery Williamson from the New York Jets.
This comes three weeks after the injury to starting inside-linebacker Devin Bush.
Bush is out for the season with a torn ACL.
Robert Spillane has filled in admirably in his place, but we thought Kevin Colbert should be working the phone lines in effort to bolster the position due to Spillane's lack of ceiling and our lack of faith in Ulysses Gilbert III being the next man up.
Gilbert III is also banged up.
Williamson, a five year vet had 120 tackles and three sacks in 2019.
He's a smart linebacker with good instincts who is a bit more athletic than Spillane and is best known for his ability to stop the run.
Granted, the Jets haven't been doing much of stopping anyone this season.
The Ravens gashed the Steelers on the ground today for over 200 yards - so I'd imagine Colbert had a bit of trouble sleeping.
I think we see Williamson rotate with Spillane and Vince Williams early as this is more about depth in my opinion.
Williamson is only owed 4.75 million this year, meaning he fits the current salary cap restraints facing the team.
He's also a Free Agent at the end of the year, meaning the Steelers likely see him as a rental - assuming Bush is ready to retake the reigns next season.
If they do finalize the deal, I can't imagine it would be for more than a 5th round pick heading the way of the New York Jets.
