The Steelers have a lot to do in their offseason. I wanted to start a new series called “Wish List Wednesday”, where I go over prospects that I would like to see wear black and gold. So, with the first member of my wish list, let’s look at cornerback Ga’Quincy “Kool Aid” McKinstry.
Let’s be honest, the Steelers' cornerback room must get younger. They found a future star in Joey Porter Jr. last year. Now, it’s time to solidify the other side. Pittsburgh took cornerback Cory Trice last year, but after missing out on the season due to injury, the question remains.
McKinstry is your press man corner that will win his one one-on-ones. He isn’t afraid to play with his back to the quarterback. He also flashed in special teams, returning punts for Alabama. He is a good open-field tackler, so he’ll fit right in. The Steelers love their press man corners, just look at their last draft. Adding McKinstry not only solidifies the corner room but gives Pittsburgh the potential to have two All-Pro corners.
So, what’s the best-case scenario? The Steelers get their third long, press-man corner. It solidifies their cornerback room for years to come. The trio of Porter Jr., Trice Jr., and McKinstry becomes the best cornerback trio the Steelers have ever had. The defense forces more turnovers, and the Steelers' defense becomes feared again.
The worst-case scenario? Trice doesn’t develop into the player he’s projected to be by Steelers Nation. The Steelers still have a good corner duo, not a trio. It will still take pressure from the defense and give Porter Jr. some help. A one-two punch of Porter Jr. and McKinstry will strike fear in opposing quarterbacks.
As always, let me know what you think about it, but who would you take with the twentieth pick in the draft?
