Mandatory Mini-Camp is just about here! The Steelers have a lot of things to be excited and concerned about. The offensive line is notably young, but has some decent experience with the return of 3 starters, and signings of 2 free agents. The receiver room has some new, exciting faces. Stephon Tuitt’s retirement brings attention to the defensive line. Of course, we couldn’t go without mentioning the ongoing quarterback battle!
For this edition of
Would You Rather, we will dive into some spots on the roster concerning position battles, solidified spots, and maybe even some unexpected hypotheticals—simply because I thrive off of those questions.
Without further ado… Would you rather???
See the Steelers sign/trade for a mid-tier defensive lineman or wait to see what they have in the preseason?
This is a hot topic among Steelers Nation. Let’s talk about it. Earlier we suggested trading for a
familiar face in Javon Hargrove. However, with the draft and salary capital the Steelers' often value over all else, a Hargrove reunion may not be likely. Additionally, having the return of Chris Wormley, Cameron Heyward, and Tyson Alualu puts the Steelers in a manageable position. Young guys like Montravius Adams, Isaiahh Loudermilk, and 3rd round rookie Demarvin Leal will inevitably have their opportunities (gotta give the main guys a rest!) It does beg the question… are these three enough to compete in a stacked AFC North?
See Terrell Edmunds in the box or in more coverage areas?
The Steelers are in a really good spot with their safety depth. They currently have four dudes with starting experience and a second-year player in Tre Norwood who has the flexibility to play in the slot and safety positions. With the unknown of how Devin Bush will play this year, could we see Terrell Edmunds subbed into the box more often with Minkah Fitzpatrick and Damontae Kazee/Karl Joseph in coverage? Edmunds, despite his previous inconsistencies, has grown in coverage and is a physical supporter in the run game. In another contract year, Edmunds will certainly play with eyes on a bigger payday than what he got this year. The safety market is very hot and cold. The flexibility of Edmunds could be needed.
See Chase Claypool in the slot or Gunner Olszewski/Anthony Miller?
Chase is on the case! Rather, he’s on a mission. After an underwhelming sophomore year, Claypool will have an opportunity to progress in an important third season. He is a rare, athletic freak. If he can put it all together… it could be incredible. With that being said, he is used to the jet-sweep motions Matt Canada frequently employs. He could also be a big mismatch against smaller nickel corners, safeties, and linebackers. However, Gunner and Miller have that prototypical “fit” for the slot position. Anthony Miller is a dark horse WR 4 or 5 with the presence of Mitch Trubisky, his former gunslinger. It would certainly provide that “comfort in ability” that Tomlin and co. frequently quote. Then again, Claypool’s potential in that spot is tremendous…
Trade Rudolph for a 5th-round pick or Trubisky for a 2nd/3rd?
I guarantee this was not even on your radar. If you don’t know me by now, please do know that I love hypotheticals. So let's draw it out: Pickett and Trubisky have become the clear guys in the battle for QB1—having outstanding showings. Mason Rudolph has had a solid training camp and preseason showing he is a capable backup. Teams like the Seahawks, Giants, or Panthers aren’t thrilled with their situations and begin to sweat over their depth. They don’t like Jimmy G or Baker Mayfields’ financial commitments… but Trubisky? He would have a cheap contract and has that starting experience. At the same time, another team with a young QB determines they want a cheap veteran backup QB. The Steelers after the final preseason game get two calls… one team is willing to trade a 3rd rounder that could turn into a 2nd round pick for Trubisky… the other wants to trade a 5th round pick for Rudolph… Let’s also assume the Trubisky and Pickett battle is so close but leans towards Pickett…
Which deal are you taking?
That last one is a tough one for me. A 2nd or 3rd round pick is a very strong offer. Rudolph’s 5th round offer is also a decent offer for a backup QB—the cost of Josh Dobbs to Jacksonville 3 years ago. So tell me:
which would you rather take?
