Is it Time for Steelers to Abandon Tradition?

Everyone loves a good tradition. Family traditions, friendship traditions to even work traditions, but sometimes traditions can get old and get lost in the past if you don’t adapt to the current world. In this case it's the “Steeler Way” that has seemingly got left behind in the old world of football and does not look like the incumbent party's care to get more modern and with the current times of the NFL.

The days of winning solely through defense is gone even though the week 2 game against Cleveland was essentially that. The new modern NFL is a great air attack with schemes to get guys in space and if it’s man coverage, find them ways to get open. Even with all that, running the ball still is a large part of the game. The Eagles seem to be the golden child when it comes to winning in the trenches but also using that to their advantage with play action to open up the deep ball. Since the Hiring of Matt Canada, the Steelers have had zero success running the ball consistently and have had little to no success throwing the ball.

What does this mean? I think it means that Mike Tomlin might have too much power or has too much pride to fire Canada especially mid-season because “that’s not the Steeler way.”

The Steeler way is now posting 9-8 seasons and then bragging about not having a losing season, and failing to win a playoff game in 7 years. I’m not for the firing of Tomlin but I think it's time to get rid of what is not working and start working on getting an offensive coordinator that knows modern NFL schemes and can let Tomlin work with the defense more often than not.

It’s time to abandon tradition if the tradition is essentially accepting mediocre performances year in and year out. This city lives for the Steelers and they deserve to have a team that is feared again, a team that when someone sees them on their schedule for the year is worried how they are going to prepare for such a unit. It's time to modernize this historical franchise.
